Will intramural squabbling derail debt-ridden Sony?

Article Abstract:

Sony Corp's linking of its consumer electronics business with its music and motion picture groups is causing more conflict than cooperation. Some industry analysts feel the synergy between the electronics and entertainment groups is only a fad but Sony officials say that although the meshing of its hardware and software products will take time, the company will benefit in the long run. Results of synergy are shown in the increase in audio equipment sales in Japan shortly after Sony's linking with American company CBS Records. Analysts contend that Sony needs strong annual growth from its movie group, Sony Pictures Entertainment, to keep from plunging into debt. Problems between the hardware and software groups include disagreement over usage of digital audio tape and hardware executives accusing the software group of alienating outside software manufacturers.

Philips offers its challenge to Sony digital tape player

Article Abstract:

Philips NV introduces a new digital audio tape (DAT) recorder that includes advantageous features at a price lower than machines from Japanese rivals such as Sony. The new recorder is introduced at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, NV. It will have a retail price of between $500 and $600. The machine was developed with the assistance of the Tandy Corp, and Philips is rumored to have the support of several partners including Matsushita Electric Industrial Co, owners of MCA Inc. The main advantage of the Philips player, known as the digital compact cassette, is that it can play conventional analog cassettes as well as DAT cassettes. The design of the system also allows record companies to inexpensively mass produce DAT cassettes.
