Working a modest miracle

Article Abstract:

Japanese Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi, a surprise candidate for the position, has managed to create a bill to deal with lending institutions. Little has been expected of this leader. His aides have worked with the Democratic Party and the Heiwa-Kaikaku to present the bill to the Diet. Obuchi has to take drastic steps to deal with Japan's financial crisis.

This article presents excepts from an interview with Koichi Kato, a Japanese politician, former defense minister, and former head of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party who will challenge Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi in September 1999. Relevant points include Kato's assessment of Obuchi's sources of support and of the major differences between them.

Article Abstract:

Hiromu Nonaka is the politician credited with having brought together the alliance that helped pass the bill about lending institutions. Nonaka is a behind the scenes power player who has been made part of the cabinet in Obuchi's government. He is a major factor in the Liberal Democratic party's choice of Obuchi as leader.
