Year-round schools: Do they improve academic performance?

Article Abstract:

Supporters of year-round education (YRE) believe the programs will improve academic achievement and loosen overcrowding. YRE schedules usually are set up in instructional time blocks that include shorter but more frequent vacations while maintaining close to the same number of days in the school year. The majority of these programs are in California, Florida, and Texas. Opponents of YRE believe children need the 10-week summer break for more effective learning, maturation, and rest time.

Other causes of dementia

Article Abstract:

Alzheimer's disease is the most well known form of dementia but there are others which merit the attention of medical researchers and physicians. Among them are Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, Pick's disease, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and multi-infarct dementia. Lesser forms that either cause or simulate dementia include depression, brain tumor, AIDS, syphilis and thyroid disorders.

Organ transplants

Article Abstract:

Mickey Mantle's liver transplant has thrust the need for a more sound transplant policy into the public light. The lack of needed organs has resulted in some novel suggestions, including the temporary use of animal organs until a human donor can be found, much to the dislike of animals' rights groups. Other endorse remuneration for donors or simply publicizing the issue more effectively.
