Changing telephone service carriers can save money for a business or individual, but changing telephone numbers incurs equal or greater costs. In the deregulated Australian telecommunications industry, there is no incentive for the most powerful player to cooperate with other carriers to streamline service until a government agency gets involved.

Australian Sausage Software which rode the crest of the Internet wave by providing web page design services, hit a rough patch and has recently made influential corporate friends. Sausage Software has partnered with St. George Bank to develop e-commerce services. The partnering appears to bring fiscal responsibility to Sausage.

Governments need to quickly move to make use of information technology, in order to reduce the cost of government, according to Curtis Tearte of IBM, who oversees government consulting around the world. Governments also need to become more interested in customer service, which is not normally associated with bureaucracies.
