Young lured by Web ads: study

Article Abstract:

According to a study by Neilsen/NetRatings, an Internet audience measurement service, children are the most likely age group in the US to click on Internet advertisements. The study found that children aged 11 and under in the US clicked more than twice (0.87%) as many banner ads as the average US Internet user (0.45%). However, Internet analysts warn that advertisers will have to act carefully on these findings to prevent a backlash from critics of children's advertising. US federal law prohibits advertisers from collecting personal data from children online without parental permission. However, the biggest hurdle to marketing to children is that they do not have credit cards to order products online. The study also found that children are lured into clicking on ads by including interactive features in ads such as game playing or contests. Internet analysts warn that young Internet users need to be constantly challenged to keep them clicking. The study shows that children tend to tire of clicking on ads as they enter their teens.

B of M, Royal Bank pledge to boost small-business lending

Article Abstract:

Bank of Montreal and Royal Bank of Canada have vowed their merged operations would increase lending to small- and medium-sized businesses by 100% within the five years of their union. Bank of Montreal Chairman Matthew Barrett said the merged bank is expected to issue loans amounting to C$40 billion by 2004, up 100% from the combined C$20 billion that the two banks currently maintained. The commitment was given by the two banks as part of its efforts to gain support for their proposed merger from Canadians, particularly small business owners.
