Suicide and religion: did Durkheim commit the ecological fallacy, or did van Poppel and Day combine apples and oranges?

Article Abstract:

A comment on van Poppel and Day's article "A Test of Durkheim's Theory of Suicide - Without Committing the 'Ecological Fallacy'" is presented. The authors questioned Emile Durkheim's hypothesis that 19th-century European Catholicism protected its followers against suicide better than did Protestant sects. Supporting earlier critics, they argued that the suicide rates of Catholics and Protestants cannot be compared. However, unlike earlier critics, the authors employed a unique Netherlands data set that provides suicide rates by age, gender and religious affiliation.
