This article examines the potential reception of OneSteel in the Australian financial markets. Issues include the decision of BrokenHill Proprietary Company Limited (BHP) to divest its interests in OneSteel as part of its corporate reorganization, and the asset and financial management of the company.

Privatization of government enterprises in Australia has created a variety of defensive investment opportunities. Various sectors are discussed, among them gas and electricity distribution/production, toll roads, and infrastructure groups. Telstra is discussed as a provider of infrastructure services. Airports are discussed, but only the Aukland New Zealand one is available now for direct investment.

Floating rate securities are becoming increasingly popular because of great success with internet companies and in privatization of government corporations. However investors should way the greater risk that comes with this type of securities, which rely on upward movement of the stock market.
