Edward Shils (1910-1995)

Article Abstract:

Sociologist Edward Shils contributed immensely to the growth of sociology as an academic discipline. In particular, Shils incorporated European social and political thought into sociology. Many of his scholarly works focused on political pluralism and civil society and the scientific intellectual's part in their advancement or destruction. Shils' most popular book, 'The Torment of Secrecy,' criticized McCarthyism's populist sources.

The tolerable windows approach: lessons and limitations

Article Abstract:

The Tolerable Windows Approach (TWA) considers distributional issues in its assessment of climatic change. The TWA can also be used to assess the opportunity cost of imposing emissions laws and other environmental policies. It can also support the definition of targets for climate change policy. However, the TWA does not provide for the design of mitigation policies that will aid ion cushioning the effects of drastic global change.
