Keep track of US signposts

Article Abstract:

Economic conditions in the United States are worth watching as a way to predict what will happen in the global economy and in the Australian economy. Various things to look for are discussed. Data provided by the US National Association of Purchasing Management (NAPM) in its NAPM Composite Index and the Conference Board in its Conference Board Leading Index are useful. A serious recession is not yet indicated, but there are reasons to worry. Both bad news and good news can be seen in the indices. World mineral and energy prices are important for the price of Australian stocks (shares), especially with key mineral stocks not high. Graphs for the NAPM index, 1/80-1/00, and for The Conference Board index, 1/79-12/00, are included.
