Mind the gap: How good funds can yield bad results

Article Abstract:

The gap between the funds' official returns and the returns earned by the typical investor are examined in order to help the investors from making mistakes while investing in mutual funds or stocks. Some guidelines that help avoiding mistakes that produce poor results from good funds are using the benchmarks, looking for lower-risk funds within a category, and creating a plan for staying diversified.

Good funds that have been held back by large caps

The funds with average market caps well above their category norm's in categories other than the three large-cap categories are highlighted. Performance ratings of Brandywine, Weitz Value, Wasatch Heritage and Fidelity Asset are listed along with their share of assets in large caps and top holdings.
