Banks are forcing customers to minimize account transactions if they want to avoid paying fees and charges. Customers looking to avoid these fees should investigate whether they have the right account, the cost of over-the-counter transactions, and the value of their business with their bank. Furthermore, customers should avoid dealing with multiple banks by having a single relationship with a bank of their choice.

Parents need to start planning early if they want to sent their children to private schools and onto the universities. One strategy involves managed fund investing in the sharemarket. Parents must also set up their own regular savings plan regardless of investment strategy.

Challenging times for planners

The financial planning industry in 1998 is being driven by growth from Australians' interest in investment and soon by the employees who want to realize sound investment in superannuation. The client base is also broadening to include younger investors. Superannuation choice will be the biggest issue facing financial planners in the next couple of years and the complexity of legislation affecting investments.
