Still standing: America's most celebrated sports jester and journalist recalls some of his most painful achievements

Article Abstract:

Journalist and amateur sports aficionado George Plimpton reflects upon his various efforts to challenge his own athletic talents for almost 40 years with professional teams and athletes. He played quarterback for the Detroit Lions, goalie with the Boston Bruins, forward with the Boston Celtics, and boxed with light-heavyweight champion Archie Moore. All of this was accomplished during his career as a participatory journalist for Sports Illustrated. His worst injury was the bruise to his ego from his failure to succeed at any sport on a professional level.
