At the end of the tax year investors in Australia begin to study strategies that could give them large tax deductions, but they should know that the tax office also studies such plans. Care should be exercised. Financial advisers often try to diversify portfolios of clients by putting in smaller companies. Some things such as ostrich farming attracted investors with get-rich-quick pitches and disappointments ensued, but there are tax-effective strategies that can succeed.

Australia is second to Finland in Internet use; however, the financial services industry is behind in offering Internet investment services. Australian-based Internet investment services are expected to be launched by the end of 1997 and beginning of 1998. The Internet promises to provide access to research once enjoyed only by brokers as well as streamline the cost of service to investors.
