However, there was some disagreement as to what constitutes a family, with most including childless couples and single parents, but excluding same-sex couples.

Statistics from readers responding to the survey indicate that 95% own a pet, that 69% own cats, 26% own dogs, and that 89% of those responding say that they have a pet for companionship. Most respondents have multiple pets, and 36% say that the pet, or pets, sleep on their bed.
