Rocks, rights and rituals

Article Abstract:

A debate over Stonehenge on England's Wiltshire Downs has begun because of a plan by English Heritage, the owner of the site, to build an interpretation center and reroute a nearby road, limiting access to the monument. Part of the debate is over funding; the center will cost up to 10 million pounds and the government is unwilling to foot the whole bill, preferring a partially private, commercial approach. English Heritage and the National Trust are appealing the rejection of the plan by the Salisbury District Council.

Britain's secret science parks

Article Abstract:

Britain's 13 biosphere reserves, established after the 1968 Biosphere Conference, are endangered by benign neglect, a lack of funding, and general disinterest. Some, such as the Beinn Eighe reserve, are actually thriving, incorporating the intended buffer zone for experimental development as well as a protected core reserve. Others, doomed by a poor selection process, may soon be denotified by UNESCO. Ideally Britain should voluntarily denotify the most disappointing sites to restore credibility in the overall program.

Claiming our heritage

Article Abstract:

The Lake District, an English national park since 1949, is nearly overwhelmed by traffic problems. The Friends of the Lake District are developing proposals, including bus and bicycle routes, to deal with this problem. The rush of visitors will only be made manageable by controlling the current use of automobiles to visit this region.
