Britain's true Land's End

Article Abstract:

The Minquiers archipelago, part of the Channel Islands located 28 km south of Jersey, represents the southernmost point in the UK. Its ownership has been a point of dispute between France and the UK since the 19th century. Only one of the islands reflects human habitation, Maitresse Ile, which was occupied by Neolithic seal hunters and possibly by Armoricans who migrated from Roman Gaul. During the 18th century the island's gneiss was heavily quarried and a small settlement of fishers and quarriers was built. Jersey fishers have traditionally depended upon the archipelago's rich fishing grounds.

How green are you?

Article Abstract:

Many scientists, including geographers, are attempting to discover how natural systems and people interact, without subscribing to either technocentrist or ecocentrist views. Technocentrists support using all available resources to improve living standards. Hard-liners insist on near-infinite possibilities for growth, while accommodating technocrats strive for sustainable growth. The ecocentrist camp's environmentalist faction want to preserve nature at all costs, while communalists look to change social and economic systems in order to sustain living standards.
