Deforestation pressure and biological reserve planning: a conceptual approach and an illustrative application for Costa Rica

Article Abstract:

An index of deforestation pressure is suggested as a tool for reserve planning alongside data on species and costs. The estimation of such index and its proper interpretation, then applied a regression for deforestation rates in Costa Rica to project future levels of forest pressure are discussed.

The impacts of organizing fuel and permit exports on a nation that wields market power in international market is analyzed. Climate policy, use of fossil fuels, emission permits, etc. are also discussed.

Timber trade restrictions and tropical deforestation: a forest mining approach

Laws restricting timber trade do not necessarily promote conversion of tropical forestlands to alternative uses such as agricultural farms because of poor soil or soil erosion.
