Electric industry governance: reconciling competitive power markets and the physics of complex transmission interconnections

Article Abstract:

Negligent implementation of rules and standards has undermined the competitive potential of power markets in North America. Despite the benefits of an inherited system management approach, the industry needs to adapt a new system of governance in order to support the industry's sustainability in the event of deregulation. Such a system must be able to check vertically-integrated utilities in achieving self-interested motives and incompetent marketing strategies. However, the system must also retain the strong features of the preceding one, including the self regulation of independent system operators and independent interconnection operators.

Electricity restructuring and regional air pollution

Article Abstract:

A simulation power trading model has been used to establish the effect of electric deregulation to the rate of air pollution. Results have revealed that higher rate of nitrogen oxide and carbon dioxide emissions are likely to result from the deregulation process. In 2000, emission rates are estimated to increase by 213,000 to 478,900 t. It can be explained by the changes in electricity generation and transmission brought about by restructuring. Several environmental amendments and standards must be implemented as a result of such changes in order to minimize the costs of potential changes.
