High roads, high risks

Article Abstract:

Building roads through the Himalayas is an extremely dangerous business given the region's active geomorphological processes. Construction workers regularly have to contend with rock falls, landslides, avalanches, floods and earthquakes. However, the region urgently needs roads to facilitate the development of central Asia's high mountains. Aside from economic reasons, road construction is considered high priority in the area also for strategic and political reasons.

Earth shattering news

Article Abstract:

The 1957 earthquake in Central Asia's Gobi Desert was the the largest recorded quake in history and gave rise to a series of fault zones larger than the San Andreas. The massive fault zones offer scientists a unique opportunity to study the geologic history of Central Asia as well as climactic and tectonic changes. The Gobi Desert has received far less attention than the San Andreas because it is sparsely inhabited and poses a minor risk to human life.

Shaping the Himalayas

Article Abstract:

The most remarkable features of the Himalayan mountains are the scenic landforms created by low-frequency, high-magnitude events. The most common of these paraglacial processes are slope failures owing to melting glaciers in steep-sided valleys. These deglaciations cause major landscape changes such as the creation of moraine-dammed lakes, the expansion of existing ones and the formation of small ponds on the surface of the lower reaches of glaciers.
