History of the future

Article Abstract:

Virtual heritage is a method of reconstructing historic sites and exhibits using virtual reality (VR) techniques to enhance exploration of the display. Nadia Thalmann at the University of Geneva is creating animations based upon the Chinese terracotta figures from Xian. She plans to upload the finished display to the Internet. Intel and English Heritage have created a virtual Stonehenge display on the World Wide Web. They intend to use it as the basis for a new visitor center at Stonehenge itself. A simulation of Nottingham Castle and a VR tour of Capt Cook's ship Endeavour are also being planned.

Real world tests: tents

Article Abstract:

Seven tents were tested in the field. North Face's tent was difficult to pitch but accommodated four and was very stable. Terra Nova's tent was very stable in wind, tough and lightweight, but short in length and height. Macpac's tent had a handy offset door, was light, but had poor pole sleeve design. Nomad's tent was the lightest tested, not very roomy for two and had poor detail work. Vango's tent is strong and roomy but heavy, with poor pole sleeve design. Vaude's tent is easy to pitch, roomy and watertight. The Robert Saunders tent is lightweight and easy to pitch but a bit short in length.

Poles apart

Article Abstract:

The Arctic and Antarctic regions are very dissimilar even though they are both characterized by freezing temperatures and desolate landscapes. The former is a frozen sea near inhabited territories, while the later is a huge frozen island in the middle of a tempestuous sea. Despite its desolation, scientists flock to Antarctica because of the scientific opportunities it provides. The British Antarctic Survey has several bases on the continent where it conducts research for the British government..
