Article Abstract:

Policymakers should resist calls to limit the participation of electric utilities in the heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVACR) trade. Contrary to the claims of groups such as Air Conditioning Contractors of America, utilities do not provide unfair cross-subsidies to their HVACR affiliates, thereby skewing competition in an unregulated market. Actually, the reverse is true, the entry of the utilities in the HVACR sector has allowed customers to access economies of scale and scope, a development that increases the level of competition in the HVACR trade.

Leveraging allies

Article Abstract:

A growing number of electric utilities and electrical contractors are joining forces to boost each other's operations. The benefits of such an alliance include greater market share, better customer service and the promotion of cleaner and energy-efficient electrotechnologies. The Electrification Council and the National Electrical Contractors Association have also teamed up to form the Contractor/Utility Partnership Program which aims to help members identify new and promising partnership opportunities.

Competition in codes and standards

Article Abstract:

The codes and standards affecting the electric utility industry must never be taken for granted because they can enhance or hamper competitiveness. The industry must ensure that new code and standard proposals are not discriminatory and that code barriers to new technologies must be removed. The industry and the Edison Electric Institute should collaborate in mobilizing a national effort to focus on codes and standards.
