Partial rotor rebuilds save time and money

Article Abstract:

Power generation utilities in the US are seeing savings increases resulting from the use of partial rotor rebuilds. Partial rotor rebuilds offer greater cost and time savings benefits than conventional rotor replacements in the light of improved preventive maintenance programs. According to Greg Russell, business development manager for ABB Power Generation Inc., original equipment makers have been forced to offer more creative rotor repair solutions in the light of the general absence of spare rotors in plants as well as the low priority given by facilities to preventive maintenance.

Southern Co. buys NE power plants

Article Abstract:

Southern Co. has agreed to acquire electric generating assets from subsidiaries of Commonwealth Energy System and Eastern Utilities Associates for $537 million as part of New England's consolidation of its electric utility industry. A combined generating capacity of approximately 1,260 MW using natural gas and oil as primary fuels can be provided by the plants. As part of the deal, the plants will be owned and operated by Southern Energy while sale of the output to divesting utilities and the open market will be undertaken by Southern Company Energy Marketing.

Wind site brings 6 MW to Vermont

Article Abstract:

Green Mountain Power Corp. has begun operating a new 11-windmill power plant near Searsburg, VT. The wind plant, built by Green Mountain through the technical and financial backing of the US Department of Energy and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), will provide Vermont with six megawatts of power. According to Tony Armor, EPRI director of general technology development, the wind plant has operated substantially well in winter conditions. Armor also expressed confidence that the plant will withstand the rigors of Vermont's harsh winter season.
