Selling off Siberia
Article Abstract:
The shift to market economy by former Soviet Union republics has adverse repercussions on the mines, including the Kuzbass coalfields in Siberia. Since political authority was decentralized in the former republics, stable supplies of equipment to the Kuzbass coalfields have been interrupted. High transportation costs also hinder potential foreign export deals for the Kuzbass. Privatization of the mines necessitates closures, which have serious social and environmental implications for the region.

The use of video projection systems in the leisure industry has become increasingly popular, with large screen projection to be found in sites including nightclubs, visitor centres and restaurants. Increasingly sophisticated technology means that cinema complexes can be used for educational presentations, live events, corporate branding and video conferences as well as film screenings. Three different uses for screen technology are presented.

Egg yolks can be dangerous to eat because of their high cholesterol content. A process designed by chemist Harold McGee which renters raw eggs safe is described. Several egg recipes are offered, including fresh mayonnaise, curried coconut-egg salad, creme anglaise, and egg and asparagus salad.
