Spring thaw in the land of Cold War coal

Article Abstract:

Spitsbergen Island in the territory of Svalbard is home to 3,300 people, 2/3 of them Russian or Ukrainian, the rest Norwegian, who are primarily employed in mining coal. The Russian and Ukrainian governments have yet to agree on who shall bear the costs of maintaining the outpost, or if it will be maintained. The Norwegian government faces a similar dilemma over expanding the activities of Store Norske Spitsbergen Kulkompani inland at a cost of 80 million pounds. An increase in tourism would help one problem, but create others for the fragile ecosystem of the island which is a prime botanical research site.

Crisis at school

Article Abstract:

A survey indicates a shortage of secondary school teachers in Great Britain. Geographers at Queen Mary and Westfield college conducted the recent study, which also concludes that the shortage is greater than British government figures show. The southeast, southwest and East Anglia regions have the highest vacancy rates. While government figures imply shortages only in science subjects, this study shows extensive vacancies in languages and mathematics.

Recycling geography

Article Abstract:

Britain could organize a much-needed waste recycling program with the help of geographical information systems. Such systems could identify major sources and suitable recovery facility sites. Local waste capacities could be assessed and integrated into a national plan. New markets must be developed for recycled materials. Current assessment methods for waste recovery planning are discussed.
