British colonies Bermuda, Gibraltar, and the Falkland Islands face important changes in the near future. The Falklands have acquired enough wealth to attract a population that could maintain independence, and Argentina's president Carlos Menem is renewing his country's claim to the islands. Bermuda, the UK's oldest and second largest colony, has garnered an incredible amount of wealth and is taking steps towards independence. The UK is trying to impose stricter regulations on Gibraltar's financial services sector, over the colony's objections, to address alleged abuses in the industry.

Commercial investments had begun to rejuvenate Belfast's infrastructure, but the Feb 1996 Irish Republican Army bombings in London could discourage other investors. The end of the ceasefire and the delayed Northern Ireland peace process have negatively affected public spending, shopping, and the public's confidence. Retailers Tesco's and Sainsbury's planned Belfast stores, along with the Jurys hotel project, have continued on schedule despite the renewed tensions.

The first world in the Indian Ocean: the island of Reunion offers a good life to many of its inhabitants, thanks largely to the support of the French state

Article Abstract:

The Indian Ocean island of Reunion is largely dependant on its colonial relationship with France with a small part of Reunion's economy based in sugar export and an even smaller tourism industry. France supplies over 50% of the island's income and even the very poor are able to live in slightly better facilities. Although there is poverty and high unemployment, especially for the citizens of African origin, the general economy remains healthy with French support.
