The excursionist

Article Abstract:

Thomas Cook invented and promoted the concepts of tourism, travel for pleasure, and package tours. He began his tourism career with a chartered train excursion in July, 1841, bringing visitors from Leicester to Loughborough, England. His first foreign excursion was to the Paris Exhibition of 1855, while later trips included visits to the US, Italy, Switzerland, and the Middle East. His London office opened in 1862, offering the world's first travel packages. He traveled extensively until his death in 1893.

A new age of disasters

Article Abstract:

The challenges facing humanitarian aid workers have changed radically in the 1990s. In Africa, for example, natural disasters almost always involve wars and violence as well. Disaster relief workers face constant personal danger in many parts of the world, according to the Red Cross and Red Crescent 1995 World Disasters Report. The International Red Cross has adopted a code of conduct to guide relief workers. The role of UN sanctions also impacts aid workers and agencies, according to the report.
