The measure of management

Article Abstract:

The deregulation of the electric power industry has forced the management of electric utilities to take a more active role in the improvement of their companies' long-term credit strength. However, there are several factors that must be given utmost importance by the management staff of utilities to improve their financial competitiveness. These factors, which are used by bond rating organizations to assess the financial stability of business organizations, include the record of achievement and commitment to credit quality.

Muni lite: omen or sham?

Article Abstract:

The municipal government of Falls Church, VA, and Virginia Power are engaged in a legal battle over the community's plan to municipalize its electric power system under an untested arrangement called 'municipalization lite.' In a petition before the Virginia State Corporation Commission, Virginia Power contends that Falls Church's plan is unlawful and violates the company's property rights. Virginia power also said that the municipalization will cause electric power rates to rise in Falls Church.

A muni fight in Maine

Article Abstract:

Several communities in Maine are considering the formation of local utility districts after the Central Maine Power Co. decided to lower electricity rates in Madison. Residents in these communities believe that the formation of local utility districts will result in lower electricity rates and improve the competitiveness of local business firms which are considered major power users. However, the residents are also unaware that they may incur a huge debt by establishing such districts.
