Toward a global paradigm

Article Abstract:

The changing nature of global economics has opened new individual and collective opportunities and risks for US electric utility companies. The Comprehensive National Energy Policy Act of 1992 eliminated some barriers to US participation in the demand for electricity supply in developing countries and in those currently privatizing their domestic power industries. US electric utility companies have been taking a larger role in international policies and agreements that affect the environment, free trade, industry structure, foreign investments, joint ventures and other issues of concern.

Good business

Article Abstract:

US public utility companies have played a critical role in the economic development of their respective communities. To further help restore the economy, utilities must invest in the development of minority, women-owned and other small businesses, which employ 60% of the private US work force and create 40% the new high-technology jobs. Utility companies must also recognize their citizenship responsibilities as well as their own economic self-interests and educate, train, mentor and promote business leaders from the 'new majority' of Americans.

The business case for AMR

Article Abstract:

Automated meter reading (AMR) uses telemetry to read remote meters from a central location. AMR uses equipment that fall into three broad categories. Hand-held terminals that improve the productivity of meter readers such as portable data terminals, remote disks and two-way radios. Telephone-based systems automatically transmit to utilities the meter reading on a regular basis. Electricity-based systems give utilities control of the communications network. These systems use telephone lines or radio channels owned by the utilities.
