We stand united

Article Abstract:

Yemen voted against the use of force against Iraq while on the UN Security Council, and is now paying very dearly for that decision. Most Western and Arab countries have cut back or shut off aid, and Saudi Arabia has repatriated 800,000 migrant workers to Yemen. These workers now reside in border refugee camps with sub-living conditions. Reunited only two years ago, Yemen faces its first multiparty elections in November. The economic isolation forced upon it has devastated the already poor nation and endangered the democratic process.

Afghanistan: resistance to assistance

Article Abstract:

UN assistance to Afghanistan is ineffective because the country is still in a state of civil war. Since the Geneva Accords of 1988, the UN has provided relief to both the central government and the mujaheddin resistance. Civil war and in-fighting among both groups have hindered efforts. The political interests of nongovernmental agencies have also complicated the situation. Perhaps only a Soviet-American brokered agreement can stop the war and allow Afghanistan to rebuild.

Bad sports

Article Abstract:

Areas hosting Olympic events, such as the Savoy region of France, are subject to adverse environmental effects caused by large scale building projects. After the games are over, the bobsled runs and ski courses will be of questionable value to residents of the area. But the environmental changes wreaked will remain for years.
