Where in the world

Article Abstract:

The global positioning system (GPS) is a military-developed technology that has found numerous applications in the civilian sector. GPS applications are usually found at the interface where geographic information systems, field management and automated mapping technologies meet. Most are applications that involve timing, mapping, tracking, navigation and location. In the electric utility industry, GPS applications are mushrooming as hardware costs fall. GPS-based timing and synchronization systems and GPS field data collection systems are examples of how the GPS is used in the industry.

End-use technology review

Article Abstract:

The Electric Power Research Institute and Consolidated Edison of New York have embarked on a struggle to protect the public from tuberculosis. The two have adopted the use of ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI), a system consisting of wall-mounted ventilation units that contain UV lamps that kill TB bacteria. A study to evaluate the effectivity of UVGI in destroying air-borne TB-causing bacteria and at the same time assess its safety for public use is underway.

Plug in, good buddy

Article Abstract:

Edison Electric Institute's truck stop electrification project is aimed at reducing the emissions coming from trucks during stationary idling. The project proposes that truckers use electricity at truck stops to meet their vehicles' power requirements. Electric power will be provided at such stops by means of alternating current outlets which will be installed by electric utilities.
