Article Abstract:

In cooperation with the company Jenapharm GmbH clinical pharmacologists of Jena university developed a new delivery form for melatonin for the treatment of dyssomnia. The hormone melatonin is responsible for quiet and continuous sleep. Melatonin is released from the new capsule 30 minutes after delivery and again, about four hours later. A second study is now to prove that the melatonin pharmaceutical actually improves the ability to sleep through. The new intelligent sleeping drug has hardly any side effects.

Article Abstract:

Merck KGaA of Darmstadt, Germany, and Norsk Hydro of Norway are to cooperate in the production and marketing of a new therapy against cancer of the pancreas. Norsk Hydro will produce the product that is said to stimulate the body's own immune system to fight the cancer cells, while Merck is responsible for marketing. The product is undergoing phase II clinical trials in Europe.

From the beginning of July 1999 German Jena-based Laser, Optik, Systeme GmbH (LOS), a subsidiary of Jenoptik, is taking over the production and logistics of precision glass moulds for Ciba Vision. The contract is worth DM 50mn within four years. The moulds are used in daily contact lenses.
