SWITZERLAND: ATISHOLZ TO GROW IN CHEMICALS

Article Abstract:

Atisholz AG , the cellulose unit of Swiss Riedholz-based Axantis Holding AG (formerly Attisholz Holding AG), aims to become one of the world's leading suppliers of cellulose for the chemical industry, at least for certain applications. In mid-May 2000 the company is to start production of small batches at the Riedholz mill, which is undergoing an investment programme of more than SFr 100mn. Deliveries to the chemicals industry are to start in 2001. The plant will continue to produce alcohol, yeast, lignin sulphonate and electrolysis products. The production of sulphite pulp will be reduced to 20,000 tonnes per year. The production capacity for cellulose for chemical derivatives will amount to 50,000 tpy. In order to gain more production capacities, Atisholz is seeking acquisitions or cooperation partners. Following the divestment of the hygiene paper division and the Licancel pulp mill in Chile, the group has SFr 586mn in its coffers. Axantis is also considering to start producing chemical additives. In this case, the knowhow would be supplied by a partner.

SWITZERLAND/GERMANY: FOAMING AGENTS BY CLARIANT

Article Abstract:

Clariant Masterbatch GmbH is hoping to generate annual growth rates of 10-15% with foaming agents for thermoplasts in the next five years. Currently the turnover amounts to just under DM 30mn. The Swiss chemicals group has brought on stream a new production plant for the citric acid-based foaming agent Hydrocerol in Ahrensburg, Germany. The new facility raises annual production capacity by 2,500 tonnes. Clariant is setting hopes on new applications in the food packaging, automotive and insulation foam industries. The Ahrensburg plant is expected to generate a turnover of DM 250mn .

SWITZERLAND: AXANTIS SUCCESSFUL WITH CELLULOSE

Article Abstract:

Swiss Riedholz-based Axantis Holding (formerly Attisholz) expects the cellulose producer Atisholz AG to generate an operating profit of about SFr 30mn in the financial year to 30 September 2001. Axantis is concluding a 2-year investment programme in the production of refined cellulose, which makes the company less dependent on the volatile markets for paper-making pulp. The company has so far delivered twice as much cellulose to the polymer industry as originally planned, and successful tests have been carried out by companies converting Atisholz cellulose into derivatives for the food, pharmaceutical, chemical and cosmetics industries. Axantis is to spend SFr 25mn on the refining of high-quality yeast as a by-product from cellulose production, using a fermentation technology development within the group. Axantis has more than SFr 400mn in its coffers for expansion in the field of biotechnology. This involves own research and development, acquisitions, and cooperation arrangements. In financial year 1999/2000 Axantis Holding is likely to double its pre-tax profit to more than SFr 30mn, while turnover growth is estimated at 2% to SFr 148mn.
