A defense of "A Defense of Abortion": on the responsibility objection to Thomson's argument

Article Abstract:

The Responsibility Objection to Judith Jarvis Thomson's defence of abortion states that her argument establishes the permissibility of abortion only in rape cases. The Responsibility Objection claims that the fetus has a right to women's bodies in non-rape cases as women are partially responsible for its conception. However, it fails to address the difference between voluntarily consenting to a particular state of affairs, and voluntarily acting with the knowledge that a particular state of affairs may result. Hence, Thomson's argument for abortion is applicable to both rape and non-rape cases.

The new triad: responsibility, solidarity and subsidiarity

Article Abstract:

The intertwined and interacting principles of responsibility, solidarity and subsidiarity underlie current health care systems in Western Europe. Ever since the landmark Sickness Fund legislation in Germany during the late 1800s, health care systems in Europe have espoused the welfare state concept. The changing nature of health care, however, has forced Europe's health care sector to veer towards a market forces model.
