Managerial ethical leadership: examples do matter

Article Abstract:

The ethical leadership provided by four former CEOs: James Burke of Johnson and Johnson, Adrian Cadbury of Cadbury Schweppes, Max De Pree of Herman Miller, and J. Irwin Miller of Cummins Engine; to their respective firms is discussed to illustrate the importance of corporate leadership ethics to the success of firms. Such examples serve as models of corporate ethical leadership and managerial ethics, which greatly influence the way successful business is conducted. These corporate leaders persevered in their attempts to implement their ethical ideals, despite personal sacrifices and costs incurred by their firms.

Towards business ethics as an academic discipline

Article Abstract:

Business ethics must be developed as an academic discipline in order to improve business practice. A problem and action-oriented approach to the study of business ethics is adopted. It is assumed that ethics and economics are both important and that one discipline does not dominate the other. Furthermore, the goal-rights-system is used as a framework in discussing the importance of human rights and the necessity of discussing goals at all levels of human action.
