On golden rules, balancing acts, & finding the right size

Article Abstract:

Social problems are believed to be rooted in the violation of individuals' right to autonomy. People are constrained from exercising their free will by the overwhelming importance given to the economic moral order. Instead of leaning towards protecting profit-oriented interests of corporations, equal regard should be given to individuals' freedom to choose their paths. The latter condition conjures an environment wherein people could freely act without having to navigate multifarious government restraints.

Naturalism and business ethics: inevitable foes or possible allies?

Article Abstract:

The book 'Values, Nature and Culture in the American Corporation' by William Frederick is reviewed. Frederick argues that ethical dilemmas have their origin in nature. For Frederick, human nature can only be understood by understanding nature itself. According to him, business ethics has three problems: neglect of nature, emphasis of persons and theories, and inability to deal with the relativity of values. The three main elements of Frederick's naturalist methodology are examined.

Business as mediating institution

Article Abstract:

Businesses can be regarded as mediating institutions. Using neo-conservative theology, mediating institutions can be seen to play an important role in a free society. Social justice is provided through an expanded civil society together with a framework for thriving free enterprises by mediating institutions. Such institutions also help engender the attitude where care for others results into the fulfillment of self-interest.
