Kymlicka, liberalism, and respect for cultural minorities

Article Abstract:

Will Kymlicka has suggested that a justification for cultural rights can be based on the liberal principle of respect for individual autonomy. However, a stronger justification can be found that is based on a nonliberal notion of respect, though one that liberals can accept. Aboriginal groups can be regarded as outside of liberalism because they give greater authority to the group than to the individual. This view justifies a nonliberal form of respect that calls for not treating the group's members as autonomous individuals with liberal rights.

The concept of political liberalism expounded by John Rawls is flawed in various aspects. According to Rawls, the moral and philosophical principles used to justify doctrines may not necessarily be true. Since political liberalism is used to provide an acceptable concept of justice to all reasonable citizens, the acceptance criterion utilized must be true at least in the minimal sense.
