All politics is local

Article Abstract:

Australia's unconcern for the Asian economic crisis may prove detrimental to its own economy. One reason for Australia's lack of interest in international politics was the 1998 federal elections, which shifted the public's attention towards tax reform and domestic issues. The political and cultural differences between Asia and Australia may also explain the inefficient media coverage on an event that could have major economic consequences for Australia.
