Any sign of hope for Nicaraguans?
Article Abstract:
The 1996 presidential elections in Nicaragua will signal the government's ability to have a clean electoral process and the victor's ability to govern without a continued resort to the violent settling of conflicts. There are two main contenders for president, Daniel Ortega of the Sandinista National Liberation Front and Arnoldo Aleman of the Liberal Alliance. The victor will have the country's severe economic problems to deal with. Nicaragua has the world's highest national debt per capita and is the poorest country in the Americas after Haiti. The unemployment rate is a staggering 60%. There are also the problems of violence and lawlessness.
