Anyone for the roller-coaster

Article Abstract:

As the United Nations' five-year mandate ends and a new Secretary-General is chosen, several administrative changes deserve consideration. The top post consists of two full-time jobs, diplomatic and bureaucratic, requiring skill sets and experience rarely found in one person. A business leader should be appointed as the S-G's deputy, effectively chief executive officer for the organization, to make needed reforms and seek funding. Three changes in the selection process for the next S-G are also proposed.

Paying for the UN: a suitable case for treatment

Article Abstract:

A new funding proposal from the members of the European Union could end the persistent funding problems that plague the United Nations. Internal political strife is compounding the US's intransigence in paying dues, and the new system might lower the US's bill. The plan calls for member states in arrears to submit a catch-up plan, with a new scale of contributions for the future and incentives to members paying promptly, balanced by punishments for those in arrears.
