The Medicare Cost Report and the limits of hospital accountability: improving financial accounting data
Article Abstract:
Issues are discussed regarding deficiencies of the Medicare Cost Reports (MCR) as a public source of hospital financial accounting information which hospitals must file annually to obtain reimbursement for the care of Medicare patients. Audited financial statements often give a more complete picture.

The bases for the idea that Medicare requires transformative change are discussed, and include the fiscal danger presented by the aging of the large Baby Boom generation, the inability of Medicare to ever control its costs, and the need to reform the program to mirror private health insurance plans.
