China's environment and security: simple myths and complex realities

Article Abstract:

China's economic modernization has been at the cost of worsening quality of air, water and soils, increasing noise pollution, food contamination and aesthetic degradation. China's response to stem ecosystemic degradation, which requires skilled resource management, has been lacking as evidenced by erosion levels that currently affect about one-third of Chinese soil. These and other aspects of degradation has already cost the equivalent of at least 5% of the country's GDP. However, growing political stability and other factors should contribute towards better management of the environment.

A world of new security dilemmas

Article Abstract:

Little research is available to explain and analyze the implications of the radical transformation brought about in the Eurasian security region by the collapse of the Soviet Union. The dramatic realignments among alliances, the emergence of new states and the elimination of the Marxist-Leninist perception of a two-camp struggle have presented western security analysts with a new and considerably intimidating complex environment. 'Security Dilemmas in Russia and Eurasia' provides a number of useful insights pertaining to the security dilemmas of several newly independent states.

Empowering workers: the privatization of social security in Chile

Article Abstract:

Chile's Pension Savings Account (PSA) has become popular and has contributed to the country's economic and social stability. Chilean workers perceive the PSA to be fair. Because of the system, workers become investors in Chile's assets because the private pension funds have major holdings in the country's largest firms. Over 90% of Chile's workforce have shifted from the old system to the new. When given a choice, workers will invest in the free market.
