Cognitive disability, misfortune, and justice

Article Abstract:

Individuals with congenital, severe cognitive impairments are not badly off in relation to justice and thus are not owed special compensation according to comparative or non-comparative principles of justice, contrary to what some arguments claim. Nevertheless, special relations such as between parent and child, family members, or friends justify some partiality between individuals, and are necessary for the good life of a person. These relations provide indirect moral reasons which, in addition to simple beneficence, suggest that one needs to solicit the well-being of the impaired, more than that of animals with comparable capacities.
