Dutch politics in the late 1990s: 'purple' government and 'green' opposition

Article Abstract:

The Netherlands could be seen as a pillarized society in 1990, with different groups such as Socialists and Catholics representing pillars, with meeetings between pillar leaders and less contact between pillars at lower levels. This has changed, especially following the 1994 elections. A coalition has been set up involving the PvdA, or Labor Party, and VVD, or Liberals, with the Democrats or D66 providing support. These changes appear to have been reinforced in 1998, though the Greens could enter a coalition government in a subsequent election.

Explaining the electoral success of green parties: a cross-national analysis

Article Abstract:

The reasons behind the electoral success of European green parties for the past 20 years have been studied. The Green parties have been successful in Austria, Belgium, Sweden, Switzerland, France, Germany, Finland, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. Various opportunity structures which characterize European political parties contributed to their triumphs. These findings reveal that the achievements of green parties can be traced to federalism, the characteristics of the party system and Europe's high unemployment rate.
