Elite settlements in Taiwan

Article Abstract:

The rival political elites that dominate Taiwan politics have cleverly built a wealthy democratic regime through compromise and negotiation since the late 1980s. However, newly-elected legislators replaced the 'millenium parliament' during the 1991 and 1992 elections which featured full-scale party and electoral competition. The March 1996 election was the first freely-contested and direct presidential election which was recognized as one of the year's five major democratic advances worldwide. Incumbent Pres Lee Teng-hui was reelected with 54% of the votes.

The persistence of postcommunist elites

Article Abstract:

Taking an elite-centered approach to nascent democracies in the post Communist world shows that those elites have traits which change and those which remain the same. The ex-communist elites of Poland, Hungary and Russia have had to make basic changes to their relationships and political behavior to survive in the new political and economic environment. Sufficient security among the ex-communist elite is contributing to the establishment and strengthening of democratic institutions in central and eastern Europe.

Australia: the politics of becoming a republic

Article Abstract:
