Embracing modernity: the conservatism of Hayek and Polanyi

Article Abstract:

Some aspects of modernity are compatible with conservatism. The division of political philosophy into modernity and conservatism is an oversimplification and could undermine conservative values. A rejection of modernity could be taken as a rejection of scientific progress. Both Michael Polanyi and Friedrich Hayek developed conservative ideas, but respected the achievements of science. Modernity can strengthen classical values, and Hayek and Polanyi can be seen as sympathetic to traditionalists' views.
