Emerging civil society in Iran

Article Abstract:

Many of the dynamics which favor civil society development are present in post-revolutionary Iran. Apolitical clerics helped preserve pre-revolutionary structures and political clerics are factionalized. Public criticism is being voice in developing media, popular movements, by women and youth. Clerics' attempts to monopolize government control has caused a rise in nationalistic forces. Industrial growth has lessened the influence of bazaar economics and the focus on oil income. Private professional, educational, economic, and welfare associations indicate civil society development.
