Equality between age-groups

Article Abstract:

The moral judgments for inequality between age groups are analyzed, assuming that significant inequality exists and that a fairness in distribution is desired. First, the likely challenges from proponents of standard egalitarian moral theories are considered to have intuitively unfair results. Furthermore, Norman Daniels' prudential lifespan account, which is his theory of justice for age groups, is criticized as inadequate since it allegedly leads to the same objectionable consequences. Egalitarians are thus urged to prioritize marginalized people instead of evaluating complete life cycles.

Democratic legitimacy and official discretion

Article Abstract:

The ethics involved when public servants have to carry out policies which conflict with their principles are debated. Three real-life cases are first documented to reveal the debate's complexity, which involves three main conflicts concerning justice, jurisdiction, reasons and democracy. It is concluded that reasonable criteria can be formulated for dissenters to act on their individual situations, through experience from legislative choice and civil disobedience. These criteria encompass the bases for dissent, the strategies available for change and the questions of legitimacy.
