Fiji's elusive national unity

Article Abstract:

Fiji became multiracial when large numbers of Indians immigrated to work in the sugar cane fields starting in the late 1870s. Their numbers grew rapidly and until recently they slightly outnumbered Fijians. Multiracialism worked as long as the indigenous Fijians retained political control, but in 1987 the Labor government became Indian-dominated. Two coups d'etat followed with the goal of preserving indigenous rule. Sitiveni Rabuka, the current leader, professes interest in a government of national unity but has yet to produce a workable draft for a national unity government.
