For whose benefit? Limits to sharing in the bioprospecting 'regime'

Article Abstract:

The search for new pharmaceutical drugs from natural compounds will be accompanied by the sharing of benefits, under the Convention on Biological Diversity. A consideration of submissions of case studies on access and benefit-sharing (ABS) arrangements shows that such benefits to suppliers are restricted by the current competitive regime. It is concluded that evaluation of the sustainability of the ABS programmes requires independent analysis of the social impacts of bioprospecting.

The atrophy of vigilance hypothesis proposed by William Freudenburg, is examined. It concerns policy change in organizations responsible for managing hazardous systems, and portrays a recurring pattern of decline, dominated by crises. The hypothesis is examined through a case study of the marine oil trade in Alaska, and environmentally hazardous system, which has been steadily strengthened due to safeguards.

The new ecological paradigm scale: Examination and scale analysis

Article Abstract:

The New Environmental Paradigm (NEP) was formulated by Dunlap and associates, with a 12-item scale aimed at measuring the degree of support for and rejection of opposing paradigms. The New Ecological Paradigm scale (NEP2) is an improved approach and is examined based on two Norwegian surveys with random samples from the general population and organized environmentalists.
