From liberalism to liberal democracy

Article Abstract:

Liberal regimes are typically referred to as liberal democracies or simply democracies. Liberalism is almost invariably coupled with democracy, but since 1975 many regimes are plausibly called democratic, but not liberal. Liberalism is devoted to protecting the rights of the individual to life, liberty, property and the pursuit of happiness, and governments protect those rights, but can also threaten them.

Article Abstract:

The National Endowment for Democracy (NED) is a Congressionally-funded, bipartisan, non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting democracy. It commemorated on 7 June, 2007, the 25th anniversary of the U.S. president Ronald Reagan's pledge on 8 June 1982 to strengthen democracy around the world, which was the motivation for its creation.
